Handheld Golf GPS vs a Watch: Buy for How You Read Yardages

Choose how to carry yardages: the G12 clips off-wrist; the S12 is worn on the wrist. If your current app or method works, keep using it.

Start with your reach, not a device category

Think about when you want a yardage: before choosing a club, standing behind the ball, or after reaching into a pocket. Where will the display sit with your usual sleeves and gloves? The S12 keeps it on your wrist; the G12 is a separate unit to clip or attach. Neither is automatically easier. Choose around your clothing, carry setup and routine.

The G12 moves the screen off your wrist

The selected Garmin Approach G12 is the black standard clip-on model, part 010-02555-00. Garmin describes its built-in clip and lanyard loop for a pocket or golf bag. That can suit someone who prefers not to wear a golf device on the wrist or wants the readout attached to their carry gear. The separate unit is another thing to place and retrieve, so picture your own pockets or bag before deciding. Its manual lets you flip screen orientation for positions such as a belt clip.

The S12 puts the display on your wrist

The selected Garmin Approach S12 is the black watch model, part 010-02472-00. Garmin describes interchangeable quick-release bands. Consider how your cuff and glove sit around a wrist display, and whether you prefer glancing there or reaching for a separate unit. This is a carry comparison, not a claim that one screen is better.

Know what the yardage screen represents

Both devices show front, middle and back green distances, hazards, layups and doglegs. Green View is approximate rather than a live pin reading; moving the flag manually updates distance for the current round. Big Numbers mode enlarges the yardage. These are workflow facts, not evidence that one device measures more accurately.

Try this pocket-and-cuff check before shopping

Write down four answers in the clothes you normally play in: where would I clip a separate unit; would my sleeve or glove cover a wrist display; which screen could I check without changing my usual pre-shot routine; what is awkward about my current yardage method? Mark each carry option for cuff fit, reach and a natural glance. If neither clearly wins, defer the purchase. If a retailer has a demo, try the reach and glance in your normal layers. If there is no demo, use the questions to make the choice; this guide is not a hands-on test. Do not buy a device until you can name the problem it solves.

Compare the fit, not a made-up score.

Check the controls as well as the carry position

Both manuals show four-button navigation, with OK opening menus. Optional CT10 sensors add automatic shot and club tracking; they are not needed just to choose a carry style.

Let your current method win if it already works

If your current yardage method is comfortable and gives you what you need, there is no reason to replace it. Both devices have rechargeable batteries; their manuals advise clean, dry charging contacts. For several months of storage, charge to at least 50%, keep cool and dry, then recharge fully before use.

Can I adjust the pin marker?

Yes. Green View lets you move the flag to update the yardage for the current round.

Do I need CT10 sensors to use the yardage display?

No. CT10 is optional for automatic game tracking; the yardage decision is about carry and access.

What if my phone or current yardage method is enough?

Keep using it. Consider a dedicated device only if you can name a carry or access problem it would solve.
