Same core yardages, different experience
Garmin's S12 manual lists front, middle and back green distances, hazards, layups and doglegs, plus Big Numbers and a button-driven Move Flag function. The S44 manual also lists front, middle and back distances and hazard or layup views. Both manuals note that these are not the actual pin location because pin locations change.
The S44 adds a touchscreen, buttons, color AMOLED display and preloaded course maps with hazard view. The upgrade is about wrist-based context, not evidence of better accuracy or faster yardages.
Choose the S12 when simple yardages are enough
Choose the S12 if your decision is usually front, middle or back, a few hazard or layup checks and a button press. Garmin documents up to 30 hours while playing golf; actual battery life varies. That rated headroom matters if remembering another charger is a nuisance, although we have not tested endurance.
A working S12 remains a valid no-purchase option. Try Big Numbers, Move Flag and course-feature views before replacing it.
Choose the S44 when the visual layer matters
Choose the S44 if visual context is the point. Its touchscreen and buttons let you move the pin on the green view, while the manual documents Touch Targeting and PlaysLike distance as subscription-gated features. Garmin also describes Enhanced CourseView maps and Green Contours as membership features; those are separate from the S44's baseline front, middle and back yardages and hazard information.
The rated battery modes are different: up to 15 hours in all-satellite-systems mode and up to 10 days in smartwatch mode, with actual life depending on enabled features. Compare them with the S12's up-to-30-hour golf figure; AMOLED is not a battery upgrade.
Use the upgrade math before you buy
Write down the current checkout cost of each watch. Add any membership fees you actually plan to pay over the same ownership period, then divide the difference by the number of rounds you expect to play. If you already own an S12, compare the full S44 purchase cost plus planned membership fees against keeping it, not against buying another S12.
That gives you a personal cost per round, not a reason to buy by itself. Name one decision the visual upgrade would improve on your usual course. If you will still read only basic yardages, keep your current solution. If you regularly want more visual context, weigh that benefit against the extra cost and charging routine.
Does the S44 show the actual pin location?
No. Both manuals say the watches calculate front, middle and back distances rather than the actual pin. The S12 lets you move the flag, and the S44 lets you move the pin on the green view; those are user-adjusted positions, not a live pin location.
