Updating a Golf GPS Course: Check the Map Before Replacing the Device

Use Garmin Express to check available course-map updates for the Approach G12 or S12, then verify the course outdoors before considering a replacement.

Identify the device and the problem

These steps are for Garmin's Approach G12 and S12. Check the model on your device or its manual first; other golf GPS models can use different menus or update methods. A missing course or changed layout is a reason to check its map data, but an update is not a diagnosis for every GPS problem.

A course map and device software are different things. Garmin Express can offer updates for both; installing software alone does not establish that a course map changed. The two devices' default green distances refer to mapped front, middle and back points, not the actual pin. Updating the map cannot promise a particular yardage or locate today's flag.

Check course updates with Garmin Express

You need a computer, the device's USB charging/data cable and Garmin Express. If Express is not already installed, get it from Garmin's official site and follow its setup instructions. Clean and dry the contacts and surrounding area as directed in your device manual before connecting.

  1. Connect the G12 or S12 to the computer with its USB cable and open Garmin Express.
  2. Select your device; if it is not listed, follow Express's prompts to add it.
  3. Review the updates Express offers. Select Install or Install All as appropriate, and follow any on-screen terms or region prompts. Course maps and software may be offered separately.
  4. Wait for the Updates Complete message. Safely eject the device using your computer's normal procedure before disconnecting it.
  5. If the device asks you to install the update, follow its prompt; Garmin says installation may instead start automatically.

If the course update you expected does not appear, do not assume a map was refreshed. Check the selected device and region, then use Garmin's course-update instructions for the specific issue.

Understand the phone-app route

The G12 and S12 manuals describe automatic course updates through Garmin Golf when the device is connected to a smartphone. For a first pairing, Garmin's manuals direct owners to pair through the Garmin Golf app, not the phone's Bluetooth settings. They show OK, Settings, then Pair Phone on the device, followed by Garmin Devices and Add Device in the app; follow the instructions for your own device if the menus differ.

Garmin's current support guidance says that, on compatible devices paired and actively connected to Garmin Golf, automatic single-course updates apply to the five most recently played courses. When an update is available, it transfers during a later sync and the device can prompt you at the start of a round. Do not assume that syncing the phone refreshes every stored course; Garmin recommends periodic manual course-map updates.

Verify the course after the update

After Express reports completion and you disconnect safely, go outdoors, start a golf round on the device and allow it to acquire satellites. Check whether your course appears and whether the expected holes are available. Finding the course does not independently verify every mapped point or its accuracy.

If course data is missing after an update was interrupted or canceled, both manuals describe updating the courses again through Express, safely disconnecting and checking for nearby courses outdoors. If the installed map still appears wrong, Garmin has a course-error reporting route. A report does not guarantee a correction date, and a map update cannot cure every signal or setup problem.

Keep the device if it still meets your needs

If the course is available and your current device gives you the information you need, keep using it; a course update does not require a new purchase. Contact Garmin for a persistent missing-course or map issue rather than resetting or replacing a device on the strength of one discrepancy.

Do I need the Garmin Golf app to check for course updates?

No. Garmin Express on a computer is a documented USB route for available CourseView map updates on these devices. The app offers automatic updates for eligible recent courses when the device is paired and connected.

Does a phone sync update every course?

Garmin's current guidance limits automatic single-course updates to the five most recently played courses on compatible, connected devices. Use Express to check available course-map updates more broadly.

Does a software update prove my course map changed?

No. Express can offer device software and course maps separately. Check what was offered and installed rather than assuming one updated the other.

Will a map update show the exact flag location?

The G12 and S12 default green view gives mapped front, middle and back distances, not the changing actual pin location. A map update is not an accuracy guarantee.
