Understanding Golf Shaft Flex Can Help
Improve Your Game
There are five general ratings for shaft
flex: Extra Stiff, Stiff, Regular,
Senior and Ladies, usually denoted by
the letters X, S, R, A and L ("A" is
used for Senior because this flex was
originally called "amateur").
Having a flex that doesn't match the
needs of your swing will result in the
clubface being misaligned at impact,
causing your shots to go off-target.
Shaft flex can be determined by the type
of swing that you have - fast or slow,
smooth or jerky. As the shaft flexes
throughout the swing, the position of
the clubhead changes. At impact the club
face must be square (perfectly straight)
to get the most out of your shot. The
wrong shaft flex for your swing, will
result in your club face being off
square at impact sending your ball in an
unanticipated direction.
General
Guide to Golf Shaft Selection
As a general
rule, the distance you hit your driver
can be a reference to the shaft flex
needed.
-
Stiff
Flex Shaft: If you carry you driver
250 yards or more
-
Regular
Flex Shaft: 230-250 yards
-
Senior
Flex Shaft: 200-230 yards
-
Ladies
Flex Shaft: less than 200 yards.
Only the
biggest of the big hitters is ever going
to need an Extra Stiff Shaft.
If you have
a very smooth swing, you could benefit
from a softer flex even if you swing
very fast. A swing that gets jerky at
the top - during transition into the
downswing - will probably need a stiffer
shaft.
If your drives go left, you might
benefit from a stiffer flex; if your
drives go right, you might benefit from
a softer flex.
